Transportation Engineer Specialist I or II (Bridge Design Detailer and Modeler) - ( 2602096 ) Position Information Would you enjoy having a hand in sculpting the future of the Houston landscape? TxDOT's Houston District Bridge Design Section is looking for a new Bridge Design Detailer. This position will work within our design team to model and detail new bridges as well as bridge rehabilitation for a variety of transportation projects throughout the Houston District's 6-county area. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Assists in planning and coordinating office operations. Performs advanced and specialized design work. Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features. Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans. Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors. Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer Specialist II Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Essential Duties: The essential duties for this job include those listed above and the following: Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications. May assist in planning and coordinating office operations. Trains less experienced technicians. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Transportation Engineer Specialist I Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Transportation Engineer Specialist II Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Preferred Qualifications: Transportation Engineer Specialist I and II Previous detailing experience in CAD environments such as Bentley’s MicroStation. Familiarity with developing structural details and plan sheets under the guidance of a licensed engineer. Ability to work within CAD environments containing complex 2D or 3D Models and produce applicable detail sheets. Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate professionally. Self-motivated to learn new skills. Ability to read and understand plans and construction sequences.
