Position Summary The Pediatric Triage Nurse provides professional nursing assessment and clinical guidance to pediatric patients and their families by telephone, electronic communication, or in the outpatient setting. The nurse uses clinical judgment and established protocols to assess symptoms, determine the urgency of care, provide appropriate recommendations, and coordinate follow-up with healthcare providers. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following essential job functions: Responsibilities: Work with health care professionals and support staff, including those from other disciplines, to provide patient-focused care. Conduct telephone and electronic triage for infants, children, and adolescents presenting with acute or chronic health concerns. Educate families regarding medications, treatment plans, illness management, and warning signs that require further evaluation. Obtain and assess relevant symptoms, medical history, medications, and other clinical information. Communicate clinical findings and recommendations to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other members of the healthcare team. Accurately document patient assessments, telephone encounters, interventions, recommendations, and follow-up plans in the electronic medical record. Follow pediatric triage protocols, organizational policies, infection-control standards, and professional nursing standards. Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing New York State Nursing License Basic Life Support certification Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions within established protocols Proficiency with electronic medical records. Physical Demands Combination of walking and standing up to 8 hours per day. Heavy lifting, 45 pounds or more, and the positioning of patients is required. Light carrying less than 15 pounds. Pushing and pulling. Some kneeling is required. Repeated bending. Frequent reaching, some above shoulders, handling, and fingering of instruments and equipment. Talking and hearing for communicating with other personnel and patients; hearing to distinguish differences and variations in vital signs of patients. Near-visual acuity is required to work with a computer, charts, records, and to observe patients to detect changes in patient conditions, to read gauges and dials on equipment.
