PHYSICAL EDUCATION / HEALTH / DRIVER EDUCATION TEACHER Van Jr./Sr. High School Position: Physical Education / Health / Driver Education Teacher Location: Van Jr./Sr. High School Employment Term: 200 Days Reports To: Principal Salary: In accordance with the Boone County Schools Professional Salary Schedule JOB SUMMARY The Physical Education / Health / Driver Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in physical education, health education, and driver education in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education standards, Boone County Schools policies, and the instructional program of Van Jr./Sr. High School. The teacher will provide students with opportunities to develop physical fitness, health and wellness knowledge, responsible decision-making skills, and the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and responsible operation of a motor vehicle. QUALIFICATIONS Hold or be eligible to hold a valid West Virginia professional teaching certificate appropriate for the assigned grade levels and subject areas. Hold appropriate endorsement(s), authorization(s), or certification required by the West Virginia Department of Education to teach Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education. Meet all requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education and Boone County Schools for employment as a professional educator. Meet all applicable requirements for providing classroom and/or behind-the-wheel driver education instruction. Possess a valid driver's license and meet applicable driving and insurance requirements for driver education instruction. Demonstrate effective communication, instructional, classroom management, and organizational skills. Maintain all required certifications, training, and professional development associated with the position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful applicant shall: Plan and provide instruction in Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education consistent with applicable West Virginia content standards and Boone County Schools curriculum requirements. Develop lesson plans and instructional activities appropriate to students' age, ability level, and educational needs. Provide instruction designed to promote lifelong physical fitness, wellness, healthy decision-making, and responsible personal behavior. Teach students concepts related to nutrition, physical activity, personal health, injury prevention, substance-use prevention, mental and emotional wellness, and other required health education topics. Provide classroom instruction in traffic laws, defensive driving, vehicle operation, roadway safety, risk management, and responsible driving practices. Provide behind-the-wheel driver education instruction when assigned and appropriately authorized. Maintain a safe instructional environment during physical education activities and driver education instruction. Inspect instructional areas and equipment and immediately report unsafe conditions or equipment. Establish and communicate appropriate rules, procedures, and expectations for student conduct and safety. Assess student performance and maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, grades, and required driver education documentation. Differentiate instruction as necessary to address individual student abilities, disabilities, and learning needs. Implement student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 Plans, and other required educational accommodations as applicable. Maintain appropriate supervision of students at all times. Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, administrators, faculty, staff, and community members. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school improvement activities, and other school or district initiatives. Maintain confidentiality of student and employee information in accordance with applicable federal and state law and Board policy. Follow all Boone County Schools policies, administrative procedures, safety requirements, and applicable West Virginia laws and regulations. Maintain professional conduct and serve as a positive role model for students. Perform assigned supervisory responsibilities and other duties as directed by the principal or Superintendent. Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned. DRIVER EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITIES The teacher shall: Provide instruction consistent with state-approved driver education requirements. Maintain required records associated with classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. Ensure students meet applicable eligibility requirements prior to participating in behind-the-wheel instruction. Provide instruction emphasizing defensive driving, traffic safety, vehicle control, decision-making, and responsible driving behavior. Conduct appropriate safety checks of driver education vehicles before use. Immediately report vehicle safety concerns, accidents, incidents, or other issues to the appropriate administrator. Ensure students are properly supervised during all phases of the driver education program. Follow all applicable laws, regulations, district procedures, and insurance requirements governing driver education programs. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including: Standing and walking for extended periods; Demonstrating and supervising physical activities; Working in gymnasium, classroom, outdoor, and vehicle environments; Operating a motor vehicle when providing behind-the-wheel instruction; Responding appropriately to emergency situations; and Performing other physical activities reasonably associated with the position. EVALUATION Performance will be evaluated in accordance with applicable West Virginia Board of Education policy, Boone County Board of Education policy, and the district's professional employee evaluation procedures. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Employment shall be in accordance with West Virginia law, West Virginia Board of Education policy, Boone County Board of Education policy, and the applicable Boone County Schools salary schedule and employment calendar.
