Responsible for installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of routers, layer 2/3 switches, 802.11 and other network infrastructure equipment as assigned. Requires technical knowledge in performing analysis of software, hardware, and transmission facilities using various diagnostic tools in support of efficient network operations. Participate in a weekly 24/7 on call rotation to troubleshoot and repair and restore network connectivity to customers as needed. IT Professional – Infrastructure will be required to perform medium networking skills with minimal supervision and in accordance with published standards. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Serves as a primary technical professional by overseeing a variety of analytical and technical assignments that are moderate to complex within the Houston Metropolitan area, with responsibilities of maintaining routers, switches, data centers networking, wireless infrastructure along with other network infrastructure equipment. Responsible for assigned network technology and infrastructure systems which includes planning, managing, implementing, installing, and documenting network infrastructure projects and upgrades. Driving is required to provide onsite or remote access diagnoses and resolution to network hardware and software problems by responding to customers and service desk work requests. Participates in a weekly 24/7 on call rotation to troubleshoot, repair and restore network connectivity to customers as needed. The IT Professional will be required to perform moderate to complex networking skills with minimal supervision and in accordance with published standards. Provide network assistance to Project Managers when assigned to a project. Compliance & Security Requirements: CJIS Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire) is mandatory. Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, and fingerprinting per Houston Police Department and CJIS standards. Candidate must maintain eligibility for access to sensitive law enforcement buildings, systems and data. The position requires familiarity with: Cisco Routing and Switching Platforms (Catalyst, Nexus, ASR, ISR 1800/1100, etc.) SDWAN DMVPN Wi-Fi technology EIGRP/BGP NX-OS/IOS XE Meraki WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as routers, switches, or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or stooping, bending, very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis and extensive use of a video display terminal. There may be sources of discomfort, i.e., outdoor installations, hot/cold temperature, and humid/wet conditions, essentially normal office environment. May occasionally require work in outdoor environment. Examples of duties EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS At least five (5) years of technology experience supporting IT infrastructure including networks, security, and hardware. System-specific technical certifications will often be required. Greater than 5 years of directly applicable experience may be considered for substitution of up to two (2) years of the education requirement. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS A valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2). Qualifications **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. ** Preferences shall be given to applicants that hold a Cisco Certified Network Associate or Cisco Certified Network Professional Certification or similar Cisco certification. SALARY INFORMATION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
