Description As the Founding Camp Director for one of our residential math camps, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the overall experience for campers, counselors, and staff, ensuring that every element of camp life runs smoothly, safely, and joyfully. You’ll focus on cultivating a vibrant and inclusive community where mathematically extraordinary high school students (13-16 years old) can thrive, while supporting staff in delivering an engaging, enriching, and well-run program.  You won’t do it alone; you’ll collaborate closely with a dedicated HQ team, the Director of Operations, and other members of on-site camp leadership (Academic Director and Camper Support Director) to bring the camp vision to life.  This position consists of two separate appointments. The first is a part-time Camp Planning Director appointment, which is compensated on an hourly basis. The second is a seasonal Camp Director appointment, which is compensated on a salary basis. Both report to the Director of Operations. The responsibilities listed below are separated based on which appointment they’re part of.  About Us At National Math Camps, we believe that summer math camps provide transformative experiences that deeply strengthen students' mathematical knowledge and identity. Many of today’s premier mathematicians and scientists point to their participation in math camps as a critical step in their mathematical journeys. It is in these immersive programs that they discovered the beauty and joy of mathematics in a tight-knit community of other “mathy” students and decided to pursue careers that push innovation in the STEM fields.  Yet, the demand for rigorous math camps in the U.S. far exceeds the available opportunities, leaving many talented students without access to these life-changing experiences. We’re here to change that. Our mission is to ensure that all mathematically talented students have access to rigorous summer programs where they can thrive. What You'll Do Preparing For Your First Summer: August through Dec (10 - 20 hrs total after first year) Collaborate with HQ and camp leadership to provide feedback on next year’s budget, dates, location, program schedule, staffing structure, admissions process/requirements, and target enrollment. Review camp outcomes and feedback from the prior summer to identify areas for operational or cultural improvement. Contribute to updates to policies, procedures, and safety protocols for the coming year. Begin recruitment planning for counselor staff and other non-academic roles. Jan through June (start of camp) (75 - 100 hrs total) Participate in the recruitment, interview, and hiring process for counselors, nurses, and other non-academic staff; make final hiring decisions for counselors. Collaborate with the HQ team to plan housing, transportation, meals, supply orders, and other logistical details. Contribute to camper admissions decisions as needed, with attention to community balance and readiness for a residential environment. Develop or refine pre-camp training for counselors, including safety, supervision, and community-building topics. Coordinate camp activity planning, including evening events, traditions, and recreational offerings. Finalize the daily and weekly camp schedule in collaboration with the Academic Director and HQ team, ensuring each staff member has a clear ‘time off’ schedule. Review safety, health, and emergency procedures; confirm readiness of medical and behavioral support systems. Participate in the camp leadership retreat if possible. During Camp: Serve as the on-site leader responsible for the overall quality, safety, and execution of the camp experience. Oversee all non-academic staff; direct reports include the Camper Support Director, Head Counselor, and other non-academic staff. Lead daily meetings with the residential life and leadership teams, coordinating responsibilities and ensuring smooth communication. Oversee day-to-day operations, logistics, budget, and safety, ensuring compliance with all risk management procedures. Oversee arrivals and departure logistics. Foster an inclusive, joyful camp culture grounded in respect, curiosity, and collaboration. Partner with the Academic Director to align academic and residential programming, ensuring a cohesive camper experience. Support Head Counselor and counselors in handling camper concerns, homesickness, and interpersonal issues; collaborate with the Camper Support Director as needed. Serve as a key liaison to the HQ team for camp updates, communications, and issue resolution; serve as secondary/escalation liaison to parents. Collaborate with and supervise Head Counselor in development of camp-wide events and traditions that build community and create lasting memories. Step in as needed to assist with urgent situations, special projects, or on-the-ground needs, modeling teamwork and flexibility for staff. This includes filling in for any staff if needed to provide time off or in emergency situations; the Camp Director should be prepared to assist with medication administration, creating parent-facing blog posts, responding to parent phone calls, etc. Participate actively in camp life — sharing meals, attending activities, and being a visible, approachable presence for students and staff. Serving ‘on-call’ during specified hours while campers are present; partnering with the Camper Support Director to ensure the on-call phone is manned at all times while campers are on-site. Oversee camp wrap-up, including staff debriefs, counselor evaluations, and end-of-session reports. What We're Looking For Experience & Skills Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mathematics, education, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Experience leading or working in residential programs, preferably math or STEM camps. Strong organizational and logistical management skills, with an ability to balance multiple priorities and respond calmly under pressure; track record of resilience when managing during unanticipated setbacks. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire staff while fostering a positive, inclusive culture. Experience working with high school students, particularly those with advanced academic abilities. Excellent judgment and communication skills, with the ability to make thoughtful decisions in real time. Previous experience with summer math camps, math circles, or other math enrichment programs is preferred.  Leadership & Culture Commitment to creating a safe, joyful, and equitable environment for all students and staff. Energy, presence, and excitement about living and working on-site for several weeks as part of a tight-knit community; demonstrated ability to maintain energy and wellbeing under pressure Logistics Camp Director Appointment For summer 2027, we anticipate four weeks of camp, for a total on-site commitment of approximately five weeks. Tentative on-site dates are June 16 - July 26, 2027. Total summer compensation is $10,000. Camp Planning Director Appointment Compensated at $45/hour for academic-year work. Typically 100–125 hours total during the academic year. Additional Benefits Children/dependents of camp staff receive a 20% discount on tuition to any NMC camp. Camp leadership are eligible for our 401(k) plan, including a 4% company match.  Commitment We ask camp leadership to plan on committing to at least two summers (2027 and 2028), and we hope you’ll remain part of the National Math Camps community for many years to come.
