About the role

Overview At PowerSchool, we power education for students around the world. As the global leader in cloud-based K-12 software, we support the full education ecosystem—from the central office to the classroom to the home. Joining PowerSchool means being part of a mission-driven team that is transforming K-12 education by helping schools operate more effectively and deliver better outcomes for educators, students, and families. Team Overview Our Research & Development (R&D) team is the technical talent at the heart of our product suite, overseeing the product development lifecycle from concept to delivery. From engineering to quality assurance to data science, the R&D team ensures our customers seamlessly use our products and can depend on their consistency. Responsibilities The Software Engineering team is a group of full stack developers who design, develop, and maintain our products, tools, and infrastructure. Your day-to-day job will consist of: Design, build, and maintain features for customer-facing web applications using React, TypeScript, and modern state management patterns within a micro-frontend architecture. Leverage AI coding agents as a first-line collaborator for implementation, refactors, test authoring, and pull request generation. Author and maintain automated test suites (unit tests, behavior-driven scenarios) to validate application functionality and user-facing workflows. Build and consume backend APIs and services that power core product functionality, session management, and integration with other systems. Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, QA, and other engineering teams to translate requirements into working, tested functionality. Debug and resolve production and non-production issues across the full stack, from front-end integration conflicts to backend service errors. Participate in code reviews, using AI-assisted review and code quality tooling to uphold consistency and engineering standards. Continuously improve engineering velocity by adopting and refining AI-agentic workflows into the daily development lifecycle. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications 1 year or less of relevant and related work experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, or equivalent years of relevant work experience. Travel occasionally, up to 5-10%, for key moments such as team summits, training, conferences, etc., with increased frequency during peak periods based on business demands. This position is subject to company on call policies which constitutes working hours outside of the normal workday as needed. Demonstrated hands-on experience using AI coding assistants/agents in a professional software development workflow, including prompt-driven code generation, review, and iteration. Proficiency in full-stack development, including Java (or equivalent backend language/framework) and modern JavaScript/TypeScript front-end frameworks (e.g., React). Experience with Git-based version control and collaborative pull request workflows. Working knowledge of automated testing practices (unit testing frameworks and/or behavior-driven testing). Preferred Qualifications Experience building or maintaining AI-agentic developer workflows — e.g., configuring AI agent instructions, custom prompts/agents, or automation that scopes builds/tests to changed code. Familiarity with prompt engineering and evaluating/iterating on AI-generated code for quality, security, and maintainability. Experience with micro-frontend architectures and module federation. Familiarity with modern state management libraries (e.g., Redux/Redux Toolkit). Experience with CI/CD pipelines and monorepo tooling at scale.
